Frequently asked questions
Who is this handout for?
It is for the friend or family member who will look after the patient for the first day or so after surgery, often called the escort or carer. Most day-surgery units require a responsible adult to take the patient home and stay overnight.
How long should the carer stay?
As a general rule, plan for a responsible adult to be with the patient for at least the first 24 hours after a general anaesthetic or sedation. Your unit may advise longer for certain procedures, so always follow the discharge instructions you were given.
What danger signs should a carer watch for?
Heavy or fresh bleeding, a fever, severe or worsening pain, breathlessness, new confusion, or being unable to pass urine all need urgent advice. The handout lists these and a space for your ward's phone number so the carer can call straight away.
Is any of the information I type saved?
No. The handout is built in your browser from what you type and nothing is sent anywhere or stored. When you close or refresh the page the details are gone, so print or save the sheet while it is open.
Does this replace the hospital's instructions?
No. This is general guidance to make a friendly summary for a carer. Always follow the specific discharge leaflet and advice from your own surgical and anaesthetic team, especially about medicines and any further fasting.
