Will I Go Home the Same Day?
Day surgery or an overnight stay? Answer a few questions to see what's likely — and what tends to make a hospital keep you in.
Frequently asked questions
What decides whether surgery is day-case or an overnight stay?
Mainly the size of the operation, your health, how your anesthetic and pain are managed, and your situation at home — whether a responsible adult can stay with you the first night and how far you live from help. Bigger surgery, significant health conditions, no support at home, or living far away all make an overnight stay more likely.
What are the requirements to be a day-case patient?
Most units ask that a responsible adult takes you home and stays with you for the first 24 hours, that you have a working phone and can get back to hospital if needed, and that your pain and any nausea are controlled on tablets. If those aren't in place, you may be kept in overnight for safety even after minor surgery.
Can I choose to stay overnight if I'd feel safer?
Tell your team your concerns — if you live alone, have no one to help, or feel anxious about going home, they can take that into account. Sometimes an overnight stay is arranged for social or safety reasons even when the surgery itself is day-case. It's always worth asking in advance.
