Pre-Op Carbohydrate Drink Timer
If your ERAS (enhanced recovery) team gave you a clear carbohydrate drink before surgery, enter your surgery time below to see when to finish it. Always follow your own hospital's instructions first.
Most ERAS protocols use 2 hours. Only change this if your team told you a different time.
Frequently asked questions
When should I finish my pre-op carbohydrate drink?
In most ERAS programmes the clear carbohydrate drink is finished about 2 hours before surgery, because it counts as a clear fluid. After that cut-off you are usually nil by mouth. Always follow the exact times your hospital gave you, as some protocols differ.
Do I only do this if my hospital gives me the drink?
Yes. This timer is only for people whose surgical or ERAS team has actually given them a specific pre-op carbohydrate drink and instructions. Do not buy or use one on your own. If you were not given a carb drink, there is nothing to time here.
I have diabetes. Can I use the carb drink?
Carbohydrate drinks raise blood sugar, so people with diabetes need specific, individual advice. Do not assume the standard timing applies to you. Speak to your anaesthetic or surgical team before using any pre-op carb drink.
What about the evening dose the night before?
Some protocols include a carbohydrate drink the evening before surgery as well as one on the morning. If your team gave you an evening dose, take it as they instructed. This tool focuses on the final pre-op cut-off.
Is the carb drink the same as eating before surgery?
No. A clear carbohydrate drink is treated as a clear fluid, not food. Food (including milk) usually needs to stop much earlier, often around 6 hours before surgery. Check our fasting calculator and your own leaflet for the full picture.
