Fasting Before a C-Section
A planned (elective) cesarean still needs fasting, even though most are done awake under a spinal anesthetic.

Fasting for this procedure
For a planned C-section, stop solid food about 6–8 hours before and clear liquids about 2 hours before your hospital arrival time. Most cesareans use a spinal anesthetic (you're awake but numb from the chest down), but fasting still matters in case a general anesthetic is needed. An emergency C-section follows different rules — your team decides.

Frequently asked questions
Can I eat before a planned C-section?
No — stop solid food about 6–8 hours before and clear liquids about 2 hours before your hospital arrival time. Even though most C-sections are done awake under a spinal, fasting protects you if a general anesthetic becomes necessary.
Can I drink water before a C-section?
Usually small amounts of clear liquid are allowed up to about 2 hours before arrival, unless your team advises otherwise.
