Fasting Before Hemorrhoid Surgery
Surgery for hemorrhoids (piles) — such as a haemorrhoidectomy or stapled procedure — is usually a day case done under general or spinal anesthesia. The fasting is standard; the bigger thing to plan for is comfort in the first week.

Medicines to check
- Blood thinners (aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto) — see medications to stop.
- Diabetes medicines & insulin — they need a plan. See diabetes tablets.
- GLP-1 (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro) — tell your team. See the GLP-1 guide.
- Blood pressure medicines — confirm which to take with a sip of water and which to hold.
- Iron tablets and constipating medicines — ask whether to adjust them, since soft stools matter a lot afterward.

What to ask your anesthesia team
- Will I have general anesthesia, spinal/regional, or sedation?
- Which medicines do I take or hold on the morning of surgery?
- When can I eat and drink afterward?
- Will I go home the same day, and who can drive me?
- Will I have general or spinal anesthesia?
- What stool softeners and pain relief should I use afterward?
- Is it normal to see some bleeding with bowel movements?

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fast for hemorrhoid surgery?
Yes. Even as a day case it's done under general or spinal anesthesia, so stop solids about 8 hours before and clear liquids about 2 hours before your arrival time.
Will I have a bowel prep before hemorrhoid surgery?
Usually not a full bowel prep — many centers just use a small enema on the morning of surgery, and some use nothing. Follow your team's specific instructions.
How do I manage the pain and first bowel movement afterward?
The first days can be sore, especially with bowel movements. Your team will recommend stool softeners, plenty of fluids and fibre, warm sitz baths, and regular pain relief so the first motions are easier. Keeping stools soft is the single most helpful thing.
