Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stop Ozempic before surgery?

Not always. Updated 2024 multi-society guidance says many patients can continue their GLP-1 (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, etc.) before elective surgery, often with a 24-hour clear-liquid diet beforehand. Higher-risk patients may be asked to hold a dose. There is no single 'stop X days' rule anymore — tell your team you take it and follow their plan.

How long before surgery do I stop Ozempic if my team wants me to hold it?

If your team chooses to hold it: weekly injections (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity) are typically held about 1 week before; daily forms (Rybelsus, Victoza, Saxenda) are held the day of surgery. This calculator shows your specific hold date if needed.

Why does Ozempic matter for anesthesia?

GLP-1 medicines slow how fast your stomach empties, so food can stay in your stomach longer than expected. Under anesthesia that raises the risk of stomach contents coming up and entering the lungs (aspiration). That's why your team needs to know you take one.

Should I stop my GLP-1 if I take it for diabetes?

Don't stop it on your own — if you use it for diabetes, stopping can affect your blood sugar. Ask your team for a plan that covers both the aspiration concern and your blood-sugar control.
