Frequently asked questions

What is prehab?

Prehab (prehabilitation) means getting your body and mind in the best shape you can before an operation. Small improvements in fitness, diet, smoking, alcohol and managing conditions like diabetes can add up to a smoother surgery and faster recovery. Think of it as marginal gains: lots of little wins stacked together.

I only have a few days left — is it too late?

No. Even in the final days, resting well, staying hydrated, following your fasting instructions and packing your bag all help. Earlier is better for fitness and quitting smoking, but every step you take still counts.

Should I really stop smoking before surgery?

Yes — stopping smoking is one of the highest-impact things you can do. Even a few weeks smoke-free can lower the risk of wound and breathing problems. Ask your GP or pharmacist about support and nicotine replacement; they can help you quit.

Can I keep taking my usual medicines?

Some medicines (like blood thinners, certain diabetes drugs and some supplements) may need to be paused before surgery, while others must continue. Never stop or change anything on your own — ask your surgical team or pre-assessment nurse which to keep, pause or adjust, and follow their written instructions.
