Why Does My Throat Hurt After Surgery?

A sore, scratchy throat after a general anaesthetic is one of the most common things people notice when they wake up — and it is almost always harmless and short-lived. Here is what is going on and what helps.

Why it happens

While you were asleep, the team kept your airway open and your breathing safe. To do that they usually use either a breathing tube (an ETT) placed into your windpipe, or a softer airway device (an LMA) that sits at the back of your throat. Both touch sensitive tissue, and the gases you breathe are dry — so the throat and voice box can end up feeling raw, scratchy or a little hoarse afterwards. It is irritation, not damage.

How long it lasts

For most people the soreness eases over 1 to 3 days and is mostly gone within a few days. A bit of hoarseness can hang around slightly longer. The key reassuring sign is that it should be improving day by day.

What helps

  • Sip water often to keep your throat moist.
  • Suck on throat lozenges or ice chips for soothing relief.
  • Try a simple painkiller such as paracetamol if you need it — follow your own instructions or the leaflet, and stay within the stated limits.
  • Rest your voice rather than straining or shouting.

This is general guidance. Always follow your own discharge instructions and any medicine leaflet, and confirm with your surgical team or pharmacist before taking painkillers — especially if you have other conditions or take other medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my throat sore after an operation?

While you were asleep under general anaesthetic, a breathing tube (ETT) or an airway device (LMA) was usually placed in your airway to keep you breathing safely and deliver oxygen and gases. That contact, plus the dry air, can leave the back of your throat and voice box feeling raw, scratchy or hoarse afterwards. It is one of the most common and most harmless after-effects of anaesthesia.

How long does a sore throat after anaesthesia last?

For most people it starts to ease within a day and is largely gone within 1 to 3 days. A little hoarseness can linger a few days more. If it is steadily improving day by day, that is exactly what you would expect.

What can I do to feel better?

Take frequent small sips of water to keep the throat moist, suck on throat lozenges or ice chips, and rest your voice rather than straining it. A simple painkiller such as paracetamol can ease the discomfort. Warm drinks soothe too. Most people need nothing more than time.

When should I worry about a sore throat after surgery?

Call your surgical team, anaesthetist or a doctor if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, you are drooling or cannot manage your own saliva, you develop a high fever, the pain is getting worse instead of better after several days, or you cough up blood. These are uncommon but worth checking quickly.

Is a hoarse voice after surgery normal too?

Yes. Mild hoarseness or a slightly croaky voice often goes hand in hand with the sore throat for the same reason, and it usually settles within a few days as the airway recovers. Resting your voice helps. If hoarseness lasts beyond a week or two, mention it to your doctor.
